Sarking, battens & roof timbers
Strip stage is the one chance in decades to renew everything under the covering. Sarking added where none existed improves weather resistance and dust control; battens are re-gauged for the new material; and timber affected by rot, borers or old leaks is cut out and replaced while it is exposed.

Timing
When it's needed
Houses built before sarking became standard, roofs with a leak history that may have wet the timbers, and any conversion that changes batten requirements should budget for substrate work. What strip stage reveals is confirmed with you before it is charged, which is why quotes state provisional items plainly.
Stay off the roof. Aged tiles crack underfoot, brittle sheeting can fail without warning, and unprotected edges cause serious falls. Photograph from the ground or a window and leave the climbing to crews with edge protection and the right equipment.
