Tile-to-metal conversion
Converting from tile to steel removes several tonnes of dead load from the frame and often ends a long battle with cracked tiles on hard-to-match profiles. The conversion is more than a swap of coverings: batten spacing changes for steel, and tie-down details are reviewed for the new loading pattern.

Timing
When it's needed
Owners typically convert when a tile profile is discontinued, when solar plans favour a simpler mounting surface, or when an extension makes one covering across old and new sections look and perform better than a patchwork of materials.
Stay off the roof. Aged tiles crack underfoot, brittle sheeting can fail without warning, and unprotected edges cause serious falls. Photograph from the ground or a window and leave the climbing to crews with edge protection and the right equipment.
